I agree that we need to support local bookstores, but I don't agree with many of the other statements you make.

I'm not sure why I would support Barnes and Noble. They are not a local bookstore, but a Fortune 1000 company. The prices they charge for books are far higher than elsewhere, and their business isn't sustainable, even with their exorbitant prices.

I buy a lot of eBooks, and if I'm not going to support an independently-owned bookshop, I might as well buy an electronic version on Amazon, which generates less waste and takes up less space.

My sense is that local booksellers need to figure out a way to support eBook and audio book purchases. A big reason for Amazon's increased market share is that print book sales are declining significantly as people switch to audio books and eBooks. What if I could walk into a local bookstore and buy a digital copy through Amazon, Barnes and Noble, or Kobo? The local bookstore can make a commission on the sale, and they can reduce their inventory cost. The customer gets the book in the format they want, and everyone is happy.
